Cannabis, a plant that has an “iffy” rep. That’s all thanks to the laws and restrictions surrounding it. But, for thousands of years in other countries and cultures, Cannabis has been used for many things, one of which include its healing power for the mind and body.
Slowly people are starting to become more interested in just what this Cannabis plant can do, other than get you high. As laws around it are starting to loosen, we are finding out just how powerful the plant’s potential actually is.
Lets, remember that it’s JUST a plant and as far as using it for self-care, there are far more harmful things out on the market. Plenty of which are actually more toxic than healing.
From treating anxiety and stress to aiding in muscle healing and skin care there are so many applications for this wonder plant.
So how can you use cannabis for self-care?
CBD (Cannabidiol) is made from the resin of a bud of the Cannabis plant which is the non-psychoactive component of Cannabis. It can be used topically or orally.
A little science talk
Endocannabinoids are a naturally occurring thing in the central nervous system of our bodies, they’re responsible for our equilibrium or homeostasis. It works like a lock and key system, the locks (receptors) we have naturally in our bodies and the keys (cannabinoids) from Cannabis which activate the receptors. We have 2 receptors in our bodies (CBD1 and CBD2) which affect our brain, inflammatory system, and immune system. CBD doesn’t directly affect the receptors like its sister component THC. Rather it tells our bodies to use more of its own endocannabinoids and therefore enhancing how the CBD1 & CBD2 use them. Easier said: it regulates things like pain, stress, appetite, sleep, immune function, and blood sugar.
What that looks like :
- reduces inflammation
- regulates body temperature
- calming effect
- increases dopamine (happy feeling)
- better focus
- better memory and memory retention
- regulates appetite
- reduces stress
- regulates blood sugar
There are so many different products out there! So, if you’re looking for all the benefits without the psychoactive experience which happens with THC, go for CBD products that contain little to no THC. Also, beware of the schemes! Don’t fall for the cheap products, there is a reason why CBD products are a bit pricey. You want good quality to be sure that what you are using actually works.
Muscle Recovery After Working Out
CBD can aid in muscle recovery after working out making the downtime shorter and DOMs (delayed onset muscle soreness) a whole lot less severe.
For my girls out there with unbearable cramping while on their periods, I really recommend giving oral drops a try. My first experience with CBD was actually for my period cramping and I immediately fell in love with these “wonder drops”. After around 15 minutes my cramping hadn’t disappeared but the pain level went from a 9 out of 10 to a 2-3 out of 10.
Try a cream
Creams and lotions are great for direct application and take away the nasty taste you get with (most) the oral drops.
